Michael Cane
AboutMichael Cane, born in 1975, is an American artist and painter based outside of Chicago. He is a graduate of Columbia College Chicago where he learned from some excellent teachers and a community of inspiring artists and painters.
At first he concentrated on drawings, simple yet very detailed. Many of his early drawings were of gestured hands and hands spelling out names using American Sign Language. He also enjoyed drawing portraits of family and friends. It wasn’t for a few years still when he decided to pick up a brush and start using paint. He experimented with different brushes, rollers, and paints, which led to painting large broader canvases and wood panel pieces.
He then began painting words and phrases with varied typographies, refining his lettering skills. These hand painted signs began to sell at local stores and boutiques once they got a glimpse of his work. The boutique shops carry his pieces, many which are custom requests. Michael has created and developed a very unique and “vintage” type of style, one which has been very popular for him. Businesses request custom signs for their exteriors as well. His paintings are also requested on vintage type furniture–from desks to dressers to pianos and kitchen tables. Not only do they get the special style of Michael’s painting, they get the look of a hand painted sign. Michael’s work in many cases combines both art and function.
Michael has created paintings for the film, television, commercial, and residential industry. Working closely with T.V. art directors, theatrical directors and residential decorators. he has managed many projects from conception to final execution and installation.
To date, Michael has completed hundreds of painted signs, paintings and drawings, and other custom works for both home decor and exterior businesses. Through it all, painting portraits and landscapes is what he loves most. Michael is very adaptable and obviously, imaginative. He is seeking a larger audience for his works, from production companies to theaters to private individuals seeking unique art that are all “one-of-a-kind.” Michael lives with his wife, Regye, and their two young daughters in Geneva, IL.
